To many, Nigeria is tantamount to great soccer and singing dentists in downtown Stockholm (Dr Alban mainly). That might not be wrong, but we know much less about the real Nigeria. A Nigeria which when you take a closer look, is completely insane. A Nigeria where your driver "borrows" and totally wrecks your car in order to commit a series of crimes. A Nigeria where you're getting bopped by the nice ladies at the local market. A Nigeria where you're sleeping with a gun under your pillow. A Nigeria where the traffic jams make Oxford Street look like Monaco's Grand Prix. Frankly, there's no limit to what can happen, and it does happen.
Hatem has spent considerable time in Africa, mostly in Nigeria and shares his subjective views of what happens when two completely different cultures meat. His books are harsh, cynical, sometimes even flat-out racist. But make no mistake, his books about Nigeria stems from a deep love and respect for both Nigeria and its people.
He also writes books about the phenomenon called "Zajal" in Arabic and that is quite popular in the middle east.
Hatem is of Lebanese/Egyptian descent but grew up and resides in Sweden.
