My Antonia e-bok

This novel is considered one of Willa Cather’s best works. The novel tells the stories of Jim Burden, an orphaned boy from Virginia, and Ántonia Shimerda, the elder daughter in a family of Bohemian immigrants, who are each brought as children to be pioneers in Nebraska towards the end of the 19th century. The first year in Nebraska leaves both children with strong impressions, affecting the children for life. My Antonia is regarded as Cather's first masterpiece. Cather has been praised for bringing the American West to life and making it personally interesting. Wilella Sibert Cather was born in Back Creek Valley (Gore), Virginia. She grew up in Virginia and Nebraska. She attended the University of Nebraska, and initially she planned to become a physician. But then she wrote an article for the Nebraska State Journal, after which she became a regular contributor to this journal. As a result of this, she changed her major and graduated with a bachelor's degree in English. She graduated in 1894. After that, she worked in Pittsburgh as writer for various publications and as a school teacher for approximately 13 years, after which she moved to New York City for the remainder of her life. In 1923 she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for her novel, 'One of Ours' (1922). She travelled widely and often spent summers in New Brunswick, Canada. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1943. In 1944, Cather received the gold medal for fiction from the National Institute of Arts and Letters, an award given once a decade for an author's total accomplishments. She died of a cerebral haemorrhage at the age of 73.
